Screencast 2 – File Reading

Whew, I finally figured out what my problems were with my video publishing toolchain on Ubuntu.  I meant to have this video published 3 weeks ago.  Maybe I’ll post a few articles about screencasting on Linux too :)

In the second screencast, we take our first big bite of “Unix spinach” by learning about file output.  We cover the following commands:

  • cat
  • more
  • less
  • head
  • tail

Why spinach?  Because regularly using these commands has a lot of long-term benefits, even if they are a little hard to “swallow” in the beginning.

Wow that was a poor analogy.  Maybe I should be watching screencasts about using better analogies.
